Min-On Concert Association presented the Japan tour of the Italian ocarina septet Gruppo Ocarinistico Budriese (G.O.B.), marking the ensemble’s third collaboration with Min-On following successful tours in 2023 and 2024. The tour opened on March 14 in Ise City, Mie Prefecture, and concluded on March 26 in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, with a total of eight performances in eight cities.

Based in Budrio in northern Italy, G.O.B. traces its origins to Giuseppe Donati (1836–1925), the inventor of the ocarina. Regarded as the original ocarina ensemble, the group has long represented Italy both in popularity and artistry.

Across the tour, the septet demonstrated remarkable artistry with seven ocarinas of varying ranges. The program moved from operatic favorites and Neapolitan folk songs to film music and Japanese repertoire, highlighting the instrument’s versatility. Alongside moments of musical refinement, the ensemble’s lighthearted stage presence brought warmth and immediacy, drawing audiences into the performance.

Audience responses reflected a strong emotional connection to the sound of the ocarina. Many remarked on its gentle, resonant tone and the performers’ evident joy on stage, while others described a sense of closeness that transcended language and cultural differences. For some, it was a first encounter with the instrument, leaving a lasting impression and, in certain cases, inspiring a desire to learn to play it themselves.

Following the final performance, the members of G.O.B. reflected on the tour as a deeply memorable experience. They expressed particular appreciation for the enthusiasm of younger audience members, noting that their growing interest in the ocarina offers a hopeful sign for the future of the tradition.

Min-On extends its sincere appreciation to all who attended and supported the tour.
