On the occasion of El Salvador and Japan marking the 90th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, the Min-On Concert Association had the chance to interview His Excellency Diego Alejandro Dalton Rosales, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of El Salvador to Japan.

MIN-ON: In 2025, El Salvador and Japan mark the 90th anniversary of diplomatic relations. To celebrate this occasion, the El Salvador–Japan Friendship Concert featuring OPUS503 and Japanese musicians was held in September. It was also the first visit to Japan by Salvadoran musicians in sixty years, and the concert was very warmly received by the audience Could you share your impressions of this concert?

Ambassador H.E. Diego Alejandro Dalton Rosales: The OPUS503 concert was undoubtedly one of the most memorable milestones of our 90th anniversary celebrations. For us, it was far more than a musical performance—it was a historic moment. As you noted, it marked the first visit of Salvadoran musicians to Japan in sixty years, and witnessing OPUS503 take the stage, sharing their talent, passion, and cultural identity with a Japanese audience, was profoundly moving.

What impressed me most was the atmosphere in the hall that evening. The audience’s response was incredibly warm, and one could feel an authentic connection forming between the musicians and everyone present—something that cannot be planned, only experienced. It was clear that the music itself had built a bridge between our two cultures, allowing us to share emotions and sentiments that transcend language.

For El Salvador, OPUS503 represents a generation of artists who confidently bring our cultural identity to the international stage. Their visit to Japan highlighted the vibrancy and diversity of Salvadoran creativity. At the same time, the warm and heartfelt reception from the Japanese audience reaffirmed the depth of the friendship our countries have nurtured over the past ninety years. I left the concert with a renewed sense of purpose, convinced that cultural exchange remains one of the most meaningful ways to bring our peoples even closer together.

MIN-ON: In the past, El Salvador was often associated with serious security challenges, but in recent years, the situation has improved dramatically. From your perspective, how would you describe the “new El Salvador” today, and what key strengths would you like people to know about?

Ambassador: It is true that for many years, public security was one of the main issues shaping international perceptions of El Salvador. However, under the leadership of President Nayib Bukele, our country has undergone one of the most profound security transformations in the region. Through decisive policies, strategic reforms, and an unwavering commitment to protecting the population, El Salvador has moved from being one of the most insecure countries to becoming the safest in the Western Hemisphere. This achievement has been crucial to advancing our broader national objectives, as development cannot occur without security. As a result, we are seeing the emergence of a new El Salvador, one that is stable, welcoming, and full of opportunities. Public spaces have come back to life, families feel safe again, and both Salvadorans and visitors are rediscovering the country with renewed confidence.

Today, El Salvador’s main strengths include our political stability, our young and dynamic population, and our extraordinary natural and cultural wealth. The country is also becoming a highly attractive destination for tourism and investment, offering world-class surfing beaches, breathtaking landscapes, world-renowned coffee, and a rapidly expanding ecosystem for innovation and digital industries. The services sector, especially tourism, continues to grow impressively, becoming a key pillar of the country’s new economy.

In short, El Salvador is experiencing a historic renaissance. The country now provides the safety and confidence necessary for sustainable, long-term growth, and we are ready to welcome the world to discover this exciting new chapter in our history.

MIN-ON: For the people of El Salvador, music is often considered inseparable from daily life. From your perspective, what role does music play in Salvadoran society?

Ambassador: Music has always held a special place in the heart of Salvadoran society. For us, it is far more than mere entertainment; it is a form of expression that has accompanied our people through every chapter of our history. In times of joy, music celebrates life and identity. In moments of challenge, it provides comfort, resilience, and unity, helping communities maintain hope and stay connected. Above all, music serves as a bridge linking families, communities, and generations. Even Salvadorans living abroad feel a deep emotional connection to the sounds of their homeland. It is a vital thread that keeps our identity alive, no matter where we are.

MIN-ON: From your perspective, what is the significance of fostering peace and friendship through cultural exchange? Additionally, could you share any expectations or hopes you have for Min-On’s future activities?

Ambassador: Building peace and friendship through cultural exchange is profoundly meaningful, as it allows people to connect on a human level, beyond politics or geography. By sharing music, art, and culture, we cultivate empathy and understanding—two essential foundations for lasting peace. Cultural exchange reminds us that, despite our differences, we share common emotions, hopes, and values. In this spirit, Min-On has played an invaluable role in bringing nations closer together. I hope it will continue to create opportunities for artists and audiences from diverse cultures to connect, fostering enduring bonds of understanding and friendship.
