On Friday, August 22, the event “The Sound of the Bandura, Songs That Connect Hearts: Spun by Ukraine’s Diva Kateryna” was held at Rapport, Madoka Hall, Isaac Kosugi Cultural Hall in Toyama Prefecture. Approximately 240 guests attended the event, which was supported by the Embassy of Ukraine in Japan, Toyama Prefecture and Imizu City.
Performer Kateryna was born in Pripyat, a town just 2.5 km from the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, experiencing the nuclear accident when she was only 30 days old. Drawing from this background, she powerfully shared her feelings about Ukraine during the concert.
During the performance, images of Ukraine’s beautiful landscapes were projected onto a screen as she performed Ukrainian songs “Bird of Happiness” and “Ukraine.” Additionally, she introduced the Ukrainian traditional instrument, the bandura, captivating the audience with its rich resonance.
Through music, the heart of Ukraine and its wish for peace spread throughout the venue, creating a precious opportunity to experience Ukrainian traditional culture.
Finally, the entire audience joined in a chorus of the Japanese classic “Furusato,” and the venue was enveloped in emotion as the event drew to a close.
Attendees shared the following impressions:
“I heard the bandura instrument for the first time.”
“It was a truly wonderful concert, with voices clear like crystal, and powerful, resonant instruments.”
“I was deeply moved by seeing Ukraine’s beautiful pre-war landscapes and watching these wonderful performances.”
“I felt the importance of peace.”
“I hope peace returns to Ukraine.”
