On Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at the Min-On Culture Center Museum Hall, we held a Lecture Concert Commemorating the 90th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Japan and Costa Rica, featuring Costa Rican classical guitarist Alejandro Gómez Ovares and Japanese flutist Manami Hino. (Co-hosted by the Embassy of the Republic of Costa Rica in Japan)
Approximately 190 guests attended the concert, including Her Excellency Ambassador Sussi Jiménez Núñez of the Embassy of the Republic of Costa Rica in Japan, ambassadors and embassy officials from 12 countries.
In her opening remarks, Ambassador Núñez highlighted the significant role music has played in the longstanding exchange between the two countries and expressed hopes for further future collaboration.
The commemorative program featured works reflecting Costa Rican tradition and culture. Mr. Alejandro Gómez Ovares’ guitar solos included “Vals (from Suite Melancólica),” ” Tres Danzas Ticas (Three Costa Rican Dances)” and “Take-one” composed by Eddie Mora specifically for this performance. His collaboration with Ms. Hino captivated the audience with performances of Toru Takemitsu’s “Little Sky” and ” Luna Liberiana (Liberian Moon),” a piece beloved in Costa Rica.
We received the following feedback from attendees:
“This was my first time experiencing a live classical guitar performance. The technique was superb, I couldn’t believe that it was just one guitar. Alejandro’s approach to conveying peace and hope through music, and his efforts to give hope to those facing hardship, showed me true artistry. I was deeply impressed.”
“The expressions on both performers’ faces during the concert conveyed a delicate yet intense passion for music. It was deeply moving. It was wonderful to learn about Costa Rica through music. Now I’d like to know more about how Costa Rica’s unique national character, as a country without a military, influences its music.”
Before the concert, Mr. Gomez held discussions with President Yamaguchi and others, and subsequently toured the Min-On Music Museum.
This project was made possible by the generous support of our members, to whom we extend our heartfelt gratitude.
