“Strohm” Fortepiano

1793, in Rome, Italy

The word Fortepiano designates the early version of the piano, from its invention in 1709 up to the early nineteenth century. It is an instrument that combines the beautiful tone of the harpsichord and magnificent expression of the clavichord, and was originally invented by Batolomeo Christofori in Italy. After successive improvements over the years, today the piano is regarded as the “king” of all musical instruments.

This magnificent “Strohm” fortepiano was manufactured in 1793 in Rome, Italy. It was built in a Baroque/Rococo-style harpsichord case and its body was custom designed and decorated with the landscape painting of beautiful Chinese gardens for a wealthy Roman aristocrat.
