They share music with as many people as possible by performing in domestic and international music halls, wineries, cultural sites, as well as in train cars, on the streets and in the forest!<\/p>\n<p>Moldova shares a border with Ukraine in the northeast and Romania in the southwest. It is about the same area as the island of Kyushu in Japan and has a population of 2.68 million people. In particular, winemaking has been present in the country since at least 3000 BC, and wine is one of Moldova&#8217;s chief exports. The traditional group dance shown below is called the Hora. Moldova&#8217;s dancers performed as part of the USSR Folk Dance Ensemble for the first installment of the Min-On World Folk Dance Series held in 1976.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9461 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/01_FOOD.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2707\" height=\"827\" \/><em>Traditional Moldovan Food (left; photo by Victoria Schin) and Pie Festival in the Village of Solcani (right; photo by Vadim \u0218terbate)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One of the essential elements of festivals is Moldovan folk instruments. They developed over many centuries, closely related to the cultures and traditions of neighboring countries. In modern times, there are many variations. Today we will feature the most popular of Moldovan wind instruments, the nai. Please enjoy the exceptional musical skill of expert nai player Igor Podgoreanu.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Nai<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9462\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Igor-Podgoreanu.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"387\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This wind instrument consists of a series of connected wooden tubes. Its name is believed to derive from the ney, a Persian end-blown flute. In Moldova, many playful and expressive songs are played with the nai.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QZU4wHjSLsw?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/www.min-on.org\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen title=\"IGOR PODGOREANU - Br\u00e2u\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Next, we would like to introduce four groups of musicians recommended by the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Japan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alex Calancea Band<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9466\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Alex-Calancea-Band.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"950\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Alex Calancea Band fuses modern and traditional music. They fascinate audiences with their energetic performances and skillful improvisation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Osoianu Sisters<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9463\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/The-Osoianu-Sisters.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"950\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Osoianu Sisters is a group composed of the five sisters Ileana, Iulia, Valentina, Romelia and Maria. Their moving harmony, called the &#8220;quintuplet voices,&#8221; shares Moldovan culture abroad.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0218tefan Vod\u0103<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9464\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Stefan-Voda-Ensemble.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"487\" \/><\/p>\n<p>C\u0103priana Village of the \u0218tefan Vod\u0103 District is located in the center of Moldova. The \u0218tefan Vod\u0103 folk ensemble performs with authentic traditional Moldovan instruments, including the cobza, bucium and nai.<\/p>\n<p><strong>National Folk Music Orchestra, L\u0103utarii<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9465\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/The-National-Folk-Music-Orchestra-Lautarii.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This orchestra was founded in 1970 by musician Nicolae Sulac, and Nicolae Botgros became its conductor in 1978. Since then, the orchestra has performed many concerts both in Moldova and abroad and has also released nearly 200 CDs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nicolae Botgros<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9467\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Nicolae-Botgros.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Botgros is one of the foremost violinists in Moldova. He is also the first conductor of the National Folk Music Orchestra, L\u0103utarii.
