Today, the Min-On Concert Association and the Embassy of the Republic of Togo in Japan are pleased to welcome you to the Republic of Togo<!--more--> in West Africa.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18112\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/796646075-1_city-of-aneho-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1576\" height=\"644\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Togo is a long, narrow country with five regions stretching from north to south. Contrast in climate and landscape between north and south is a defining feature of the country. The southern region facing the Gulf of Guinea has a tropical rainforest climate, while the north is home to a savannah.<\/p>\n<table width=\"566\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"566\"><strong>Togo Travel Guide<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Pick up folk crafts at the Lom\u00e9 Grand Market<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Revel in the traditional Evala Festival in Kara<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Experience Togo&#8217;s traditional musical instruments<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Home to beautiful beaches and the capital Lom\u00e9<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Togo&#8217;s southern coastal region is home to Lom\u00e9, Togo&#8217;s largest city. Lom\u00e9 has long developed as an export port for coffee beans, palm nuts, and other goods. While modern hotels, restaurants, and commercial\/cultural facilities line the city, traditional-style buildings also coexist.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18093\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/796646078-2_vue_lome_640.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"376\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lom\u00e9 Cathedral and Lom\u00e9 Grand Market<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lom\u00e9&#8217;s highlights include the Lom\u00e9 Cathedral, built in 1901 during the German colonial era. Its Neo-Gothic sculptures and stained-glass windows showcase its high architectural value.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18094\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/796646082-3_cathedrale-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2414\" height=\"1104\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Nearby stands the Grand Market, one of West Africa&#8217;s largest, where all daily necessities are available alongside artisan crafts and traditional clothing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18095\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/796646089-5_centre-artisanal-de-kpalime-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"793\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Distinctive cities across the country<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Plateau Region, with a population of about 1.64 million, is rich in natural beauty and home to Mount Agou, the country&#8217;s highest peak. The region also includes cities like Atakpam\u00e9, with around 250,000 residents, and Kpalim\u00e9, with about 150,000. Kpalim\u00e9 is also a center for artisan crafts and artists, including many woodcarvers, potters, weavers and more.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18096\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/796646091-6_peanutsoup-copy-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"716\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Togolese culinary cultur<\/strong>e<\/p>\n<p>Togo&#8217;s culinary culture shares commonalities with its West African neighbors, including diverse staples like fried plantains, cassava and fufu (a paste made from ground grains). They are often served with a variety of sauces, with popular options including Azindessi (a peanut-based sauce) and spicy tomato-based sauces.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 833px;\" width=\"566\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 823px;\"><strong>Togo&#8217;s beer at the peak of global quality<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18097\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/796646096-8_beers-of-togo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"746\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As a former German colony, Togo has a thriving beer production industry. Togo produces Guinness beer under license and the Guinness Foreign Extra Stout brewed in Togo was selected as the world&#8217;s best Guinness in 2017. Togo beer is known for its strong bitterness and richness, making it a perfect match for the spicy flavors of Togolese cuisine.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Central region blessed with natural beauty<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over 20% of Togo&#8217;s central region is designated as protected areas and conservation forests. It&#8217;s a major Islamic center and the capital of the central region, also renowned for its textiles. These fabrics are used for tunics and for the <em>boubou<\/em>, a traditional wide-sleeved robe often adorned with unique embroidery worn by local ethnic groups during festivals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kara region: Home to Togo&#8217;s third-largest city<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kara, the capital of the Kara region, is Togo&#8217;s second-largest city and hub of the north. With ample lodging and dining options, alongside natural attractions and World Heritage sites nearby, it&#8217;s an ideal base for exploring Togo&#8217;s north.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Traditional event: Evala<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Togo is home to many different festivals, but the most famous is the Evala Festival held in Kara. This rite of passage for local men involves a week-long series of contests where they compete in strength and combat. Meanwhile, women participate in a parade called Akp\u00e9ma as their coming-of-age ceremony. During this period, the city comes alive with performances including ethnic dances, plays and concerts.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18099\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/796646105-11_evala-lutte-2023-5.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"742\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>World Heritage Site: Koutammakou, home of the Batammariba<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This traditional settlement is inhabited by the indigenous Batammariba people, characterized by its distinctive landscape of tower-like dwellings built from mud, known as Takienta. Recognized for its unique landscape, distinct from other cultural spheres, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18100\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/796646106-12_tata-somba-koutamakou.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"669\" height=\"446\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Northern Togo: Home to the savanna<\/strong>h<\/p>\n<p>Northern Togo includes a savannah along the border with Burkina Faso, a region of vast, flat land. This area is also home to many unique natural attractions, including the Namoundjoga cave paintings and the Nok Caves, which were once used as a fortress.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18101\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/796646108-13_postqueueimg_2-63260156c7696-1024x576-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2061\" height=\"576\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Togo&#8217;s musical culture<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Togo, where diverse ethnic groups and cultures coexist, a wide range of musical genres are enjoyed by many. The country is characterized by the acceptance of diverse music, from the latest dance music to hip-hop, salsa, zouk, Caribbean reggae and more.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18102\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/796646116-15_fesnad_2025-860x645-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"860\" height=\"645\" \/><\/p>\n<table width=\"566\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"566\"><strong>Editorial Pick: King Mensah<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>King Mensah is a vocalist and artist often called &#8220;The Golden Voice of Togo.&#8221; Based in Lom\u00e9, he performs globally with a unique style blending contemporary music and traditional Togolese sounds, winning numerous music awards including recognition from UNESCO.
