Its most distinctive feature is fast-paced rhythms created by the accordion and the scraped iron bar instrument called the <em>ferrinho<\/em>. Below we invite you to listen to \u201cCarne Salgado\u201d by the legendary Funan\u00e1 band Ferro Gaita. As the first European colony built in the tropics, it was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2009 due to its historical significance.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17817\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/765180655-7_day1_cidade_velha_ribeira_grande_de_santiago_3_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1080\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Highlights include the ruins of the oldest church in West Africa and the S\u00e3o Filipe Royal Fortress, which was built in 1590.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Food culture of Cabo Verde<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Praia, enjoy dining at a wide variety of establishments, from stylish cafes and restaurants to local markets rooted in everyday life. The national dish of Cabo Verde is <em>cachupa<\/em>, a hearty stew made with vegetables, beans and meat or fish. In November, to commemorate this special occasion, Min-On will host its first-ever cultural exchange with the country by inviting Elida Almeida, one of the leading voices in the African pop music scene, for a highly anticipated performance in Japan.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17819\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/765180662-10_elida-079.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The path that Elida Almeida took on her journey to becoming an iconic singer has been anything but easy. She grew up in difficult living conditions from a young age, and after becoming a single mother in her teens, she continued to juggle her studies and work while raising young children.<\/p>\n<p>She finally received her big break with the release of her debut album \u201cOra Doci Ora Margos\u201d in 2014, which instantly attracted national and international acclaim. Her soulful voice is imbued with the strength to overcome adversity and show compassion for others. Don\u2019t miss a moving performance by this songstress who now shines on the world stage!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 2: Boa Vista<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A 45-minute flight north from Praia takes visitors to Sal Rei, the capital of Boa Vista. Morna is a traditional music genre from Cabo Verde, known for its gentle rhythm and melancholic melodies. Born against the backdrop of the oppressive colonial era, today, Morna music is often founded on themes of family and homeland. Known as the cultural capital, S\u00e3o Vicente serves as a hub of music and arts, with numerous music festivals and art events held in the vibrant city center of Mindelo.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17826\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/765180679-18_mindelo_by_night_sao-vincente.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1240\" height=\"826\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the northeastern area of Ba\u00eda das Gatas, a large-scale music festival is held every year on the weekend of the full moon in August. This music event has a history spanning over 40 years, and has garnered a great deal of international attention \u2013 earning it the nickname \u201cthe Woodstock of Africa\u201d and drawing large numbers of tourists from Europe and the United States.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17827\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/765180681-19_cidade_mindelo_varias_wall-art_saovincente-copy-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"820\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"566\"><strong>\u201cSayko Dayo,\u201d a song born from the unexpected connection between Cabo Verde and Japan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the 1960s, many Japanese tuna fishing boats docked at the Port of Mindelo, sparking cultural exchange. The people of Mindelo welcomed the Japanese crew members with open arms and eventually came to call them \u201csayko\u201d (meaning &#8220;the best&#8221; in Japanese).
