It has a massive presence on the international scene, as well as a deep historical relationship with Japan. 2022 will mark the 50th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13674\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/China2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"940\" height=\"194\" \/><em>Wangjing SOHO, Beijing Daxing International Airport, Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A rich culture has taken root in this vast land, built over its long history of over 4,000 years. Today, though, we will focus on modern China, taking a closer look at the lifestyle and culture of the Chinese people today.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/China3-1024x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"450\" \/><em>Tianjin Binhai Library, Chongqing Hongyadong, Zhoukoudian Site Museum<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Our journey today will begin with \u201cLuo Shen Shui Fu,\u201d an underwater performance that gained a lot of attention last year, both in China and the rest of the world. Guochao has a variety of connotations, but in short, it represents \u201ca style that blends modern trends and traditional Chinese culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Guochao<\/em><\/strong><strong> spreads mainly among Generation Z<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Guochao<\/em> started to pick up steam in 2018, mainly among young people born in the 1990s and 2000s (in other words, Generation Z). In China, Generation Z numbers over 300 million people, making it an especially influential domestic consumer group.<\/p>\n<p>This generation tends to have an avant-garde, flexible set of values and prefers to support domestically produced goods. They possess the power to create a new culture.<\/p>\n<p>The latest fashion trends combine traditional Chinese elements. The trend of rejecting neither and instead accepting both\u2014and giving rise to something great as a result\u2014is characteristic of the culture among modern Chinese youth.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13676\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/China4-1024x681.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"681\" \/><em>The Hanfu boom<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Entertainment on a grand scale<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Chinese entertainment is known for its large scale and high quality. We hope you get a sense of this aspect of Chinese culture through these examples.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Movies: Massive scale, with sets as large as a replica of the entire Shibuya Scramble Crossing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In China, a lot of effort is put into the promotion of movies, and the Chinese movie industry continues to grow, having become the largest in the world in terms of box office revenue in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The hit movie <em>Chinatown Detective: Tokyo Mission<\/em> (original title: <em>Chinatown Detective 3<\/em>), set in Tokyo, Japan, garnered a lot of attention for using some of its massive budget of over 100 million yen to recreate the Shibuya Scramble Crossing in painstaking detail in Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture. It saw incredible success, earning the highest preordered ticket sales numbers in China\u2019s history and also becoming the highest-grossing movie worldwide in terms of opening-day box office revenue.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13677\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/China5-1024x413.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"413\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dramas: Producing one hit historical drama after another<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Globally, the number of new historical dramas is declining, due to their high production cost. But in China, studios continue to produce impressive historical dramas. Their high quality, rich historical detail and fascinating legends continue to fascinate audiences today.<\/p>\n<p>The 2012 drama \u201cEmpresses in the Palace (original title: Zhen Xuan Yun)\u201d was such a huge hit that it was said that the streets were empty whenever it was showing. Hengdian World Studios (Zhejiang Province), where the drama was filmed, is the largest movie studio in the world, making it a popular tourist destination. ()They&#8217;ve also created other hit productions with grand historical themes, making them popular not only in China but also abroad.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13678\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/China6-1024x361.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"361\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dance: \u201cChina-chic dance\u201d created by young cultural leaders<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During Chinese New Year in 2021 and 2022, videos of \u201cChina-chic dance\u201d caused a buzz on social media and beyond. Until then, Chinese dance was developed by incorporating Western elements like ballet. China-chic dance, on the other hand, is inspired by ancient Chinese art and culture. The \u201cLuo Shen Shui Fu\u201d dance we saw at the start of our journey is one example. The performance uses a legend passed down over thousands of years as a foundation, and builds on it with graceful choreography and skilled videography, making it a key example of <em>guochao<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Another representative example of China-chic dance is the interpretive dance \u201cZhi Ci Qing Lu.\u201d It was inspired by \u201cA Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains (original title: Qianli Jiangshan Tu)\u201d a classic Chinese painting by Wang Ximeng (1096\u20131119). It&#8217;s especially known for its new dance move where the dancers bend backwards at 90 degrees. The short-form video app TikTok, well-known all over the world, is actually the international version of Douyin. In addition to videos, it has chat and social media features as well as a shopping feature. It\u2019s an all-purpose app that is used by nearly half of the Chinese population.<\/p>\n<p>One of its main features is its automatic recommendation system, which uses AI to automatically present a video based on a user\u2019s interests. As a result, sometimes even a video from a creator without many followers may get a lot of views overnight depending on the topic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RED, the app that lets you do everything from posting photos to shopping<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>RED is a Chinese e-commerce app. It not only lets you shop, but also includes features for word-of-mouth sites and social media. In recent years, there&#8217;s been a substantial increase in the demand for sightseeing tours, which has led to a proliferation of guesthouses. Guesthouses are small accommodations inspired by a recent trend in Japan: after some substantial renovations, old traditional homes are reborn into clean and comfortable places for travelers to stay. Some guesthouses cost more per night than a hotel. Efforts like these that give old homes new life and create new value for everyone are another key example of <em>guochao<\/em>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13684\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/China26-copy-1024x449.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"449\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Modern Chinese cuisine<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Guochao<\/em> has also had an effect on how and what Chinese people eat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The frog and crawfish trends<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Awareness around maintaining one\u2019s appearance and good health has been rising in modern China. As a result, frogs, which contain high-quality protein and fat, have been gaining in popularity. The soft texture of the meat is similar to chicken. A stir-fried and then boiled dish called \u201ctan huo wa guo\u201d has grown popular, especially among young people.<\/p>\n<p>Here is another example of popular food among young people. In China, lobsters were originally favored as a luxury food. About 20 years ago, people began to eat the similar-looking crawfish, which caught on thanks to its affordable price. Crawfish are called \u201cxiao long xia\u201d or \u201csmall lobsters,\u201d from \u201clong xia,\u201d the Chinese word for lobster.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13685\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/China29-copy-1024x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"450\" \/><em>Popular frog and crawfish dishes \u2013 crawfish has a light flavor and a texture somewhere between shrimp and crab<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Delicious desserts that look great, too<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One sought-after dessert in China is \u201ccheese milk tea.\u201d A mixture of fresh cream, cheese, rock salt and other ingredients is served on top of almost any kind of tea, allowing you to savor a unique blend of sweetness, saltiness and bitterness. Its defining trait is, as the name suggests, the way it uses the instruments, melodies and lyrics that carry the essence of traditional China as a base while including elements of pop and electronic music.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the musician may include lyrics that use traditional Chinese poetry as a motif, or create tunes that incorporate Western instruments or melodies into arrangements that include traditional instruments like the <em>erhu<\/em>, Chinese drum or <em>guqin<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A variety of C-pop musicians<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>C-pop is popular in China and involves a number of popular musicians across a wide variety of genres. On today&#8217;s journey, we&#8217;d like to introduce some of the most well-known musicians and their music.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Charlie Zhou<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>A young Chinese singer famous for his high, clear voice.
