The Niger River flows through the heart of the city, long serving as a water source and trade route, while the surrounding wetlands support livelihoods through fishing, agriculture and pastoralism. Bamako&rsquo;s urban design also unfolds across the river, contributing to its influence on daily life and the cityscape.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-18715 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Mali_4.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1695\" height=\"1271\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Bamako is home to the National Museum of Mali, where visitors can learn about the country&rsquo;s history and culture, showcasing its role as an African cultural hub. The African Photography Encounters (Bamako Photography Biennale) is an international event focused on photography and film, renowned as a space for international exchange with a history of over 30 years.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18726\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Mali_56.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"614\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Life and culture in Mali: Living together on earth<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>City of academia: Timbuktu<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18716\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Mali_7.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1276\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Timbuktu is believed to have been founded around the 11th century, serving as a crucial hub during the medieval Mali Empire and Songhai Empire. In the Middle Ages, it flourished through the trade of salt and gold while also becoming a city of academia, attracting scholars and learning from the Islamic world.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18742\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Mali_8-copy-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1775\" height=\"567\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Timbuktu developed around the University of Sankore, Africa&rsquo;s oldest university. Due to its significant historical value, Timbuktu was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1988.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Culture of earth and mud<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A defining feature of Mali&rsquo;s historic cities is their architectural style using sun-dried bricks and mud. While mud as a building material requires maintenance like re-plastering, it excels in insulation and humidity regulation, making it well suited to Mali&rsquo;s climate.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18728\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Mali_1011.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"622\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The mud-built Great Mosque in the Old Towns of Djenn\u00e9, also a World Heritage site, is often called the \u00ab\u00a0Mud Mosque\u00a0\u00bb due to the unique fa\u00e7ade created by its construction. Residents collectively reapply the mud coating before the rainy season, and maintaining this style of architecture is a prominent cultural practice in the community.<\/p>\n<div class='et-box et-shadow'>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class='et-box-content'><strong>Joking Relations Culture: \u00ab\u00a0Senankuya\u00a0\u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Senankuya is a custom where ritualized \u00ab\u00a0joking relations\u00a0\u00bb are held within specific families or groups. Sometimes touching on topics seen as dark humor, like status or birth, the joking relations are seen as proof of healthy bonds. Senankuya is a form of social wisdom that eases conflict by building relationships where people can deliberately joke around.<\/div><\/div>\n<p><strong>Mali&rsquo;s musical culture<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18717\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Mali_12.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1432\" height=\"767\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mali possesses a unique musical culture cultivated over its long history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The griot: Chosen storytellers passing down oral history<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An indispensable element to Malian culture is the time-honored heritage and profession of the griot. Desert Blues guitarist Ali Farka Tour\u00e9 has won multiple Grammy Awards for his diverse body of work.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, the band Songhoy Blues, born from this genre, has also gained international attention.
