Because Denmark shares its southern border with Germany, Denmark also has strong historical connections with Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Denmark consists of the Jutland Peninsula and 407 islands, 70 of which are inhabited. Today, let&#8217;s travel with HC Andersen in mind to a number of famous locations across Denmark.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The lifestyle of Denmark, the happiest country in the world<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Denmark has ranked first many times in rankings of the world&#8217;s happiest countries. Many other countries have followed Denmark&#8217;s carefully designed social security system and affluent lifestyle as a model.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Philosophy symbolized by <em>hygge<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The term <em>hygge<\/em> symbolizes the lifestyle of the Danish people. Hygge means a cozy atmosphere or space, and it represents the Scandinavian way of spending time with people you feel comfortable around and taking time to relax.<\/p>\n<p>Hygge can involve things like enjoying a delicious meal with family and friends or taking a moment to relax in the soft warmth of a candlelit room.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13336\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Denmark2-copy-1024x349.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"349\" \/><em>\u00a9Niclas Jessen (left), \u00a9Mette Johnsen (right)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>High quality interior design and decor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To enjoy <em>hygge<\/em>, it&#8217;s important to create a relaxing space. Two especially important elements are candles, fireplaces and other things that emit soft, warm light, paired with decor that encourages you to take a relaxing break.<\/p>\n<p>Many famous interior designers and lighting designers got their start in Denmark. Fotograf: S\u00f8ren Larsen<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The capital of Copenhagen, gateway to Scandinavia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nearly 90% of Denmark&#8217;s population live in urban areas and about 25% live in Copenhagen, which means \u00abmerchant&#8217;s port\u00bb in Danish. The city links the islands of Sjaelland and Amager and is also connected to Sweden by the \u00d8resund Bridge.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13338\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Denmark5-1024x621.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"621\" \/><em>\u00a9Kim Wyon<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The world\u2019s most bicycle-friendly city<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The perfect way to get around Copenhagen is a rented bicycle. Copenhagen aims to become carbon-neutral by 2025, and it has installed cutting-edge bicycle infrastructure throughout the whole city to help residents live a car-free lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>Specific initiatives include building dedicated roadways for bicycles, introducing a \u00abgreen wave\u00bb system where traveling under 20 kmph will not trigger red lights during typical commuting hours, and installing trash cans tilted at an angle to make it easy to throw away trash on a bicycle. Thanks to these innovations, Copenhagen is known as the most bicycle-friendly city in the world and was also chosen to host the 2022 Tour de France, the world&#8217;s most prestigious bicycle race.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13339\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Denmark6-copy-1024x382.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"382\" \/><em>\u00a9Niclas Jessen (left), \u00a9Daniel Villadsen &#8211; Destination Fyn (right)<\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tivoli Gardens, the world&#8217;s oldest theme park<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One must-see location in Copenhagen is Tivoli Gardens. Built in 1843, it is one of the oldest theme parks in the world. HC Andersen visited Tivoli Gardens to develop ideas for his stories, and it also gave Walt Disney inspiration for Disney Land during a visit from the United States.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13340\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Denmark8-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><em>\u00a9Kim Wyon <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The park has rides and attractions including a Ferris wheel, merry-go-round and roller coasters on its expansive grounds. At night, the beautiful lights and fireworks displays make the park feel like a scene out of a fairytale.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors here can also enjoy <em>sm\u00f8rrebr\u00f8d<\/em>, a popular traditional Danish dish, at Gr\u00f8ften, a restaurant that has been running since the park first opened. <em>Sm\u00f8rrebr\u00f8d<\/em> is an open sandwich with toppings like cheese, smoked salmon and boiled eggs on thinly sliced rye bread.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13341\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Denmark9-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><em>\u00a9Johny Kristensen<\/em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Nyhavn, a tranquil neighborhood alongside a canal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The colorful architecture of this neighborhood dates from the 18th century and leaves a powerful impression on visitors. It&#8217;s also known for being especially beloved by HC Andersen. Here, the author lived in a red waterfront house at Nyhavn 67, where he also made his debut as an author and spent his twilight years. The building still stands today.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13342\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Denmark10-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><em>\u00a9World Mappers<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Odense, the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Odense is the third largest city in Denmark with a population of 190,000. Odense is famous as the city where HC Andersen was born and lived until the age of fourteen. Although there are other museums dedicated to HC Andersen, this new museum has been very well received for bringing vivid fairytale settings to life.<\/p>\n<p>The museum&#8217;s intricate interior and exterior makes visitors feel like they are traveling throughout different worlds, and its vast underground area has been transformed into a fairytale setting overflowing with animation and music.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13344\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Denmark13-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" \/><em>\u00a9H.C. Photographer: Mitch Wiesinger<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Danish music culture<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many different musical genres have taken root in Denmark, from jazz to hard rock to metal. Roskilde Festival serves as a symbol of this diverse music scene. As the largest outdoor music festival in Scandinavia, it is held in the ancient city of Roskilde near Copenhagen. This international music festival has been running for over 50 years annually for a week from late June to early July, when global musicians from all genres gather to perform at Roskilde.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13345\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Denmark14-1024x677.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"677\" \/><em>\u00a9Thomas Rousing<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Jazz is also very popular in Copenhagen, and there are countless clubs and bars all over the city where anyone can drop in to enjoy live jazz performances. One example is flautist Andr\u00e1s Adorj\u00e1n, who Min-On hosted in 2001. He has had a deep impact in classical music world, not just as a performer, but also as a teacher.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13347\" src=\"https:\/\/www.min-on.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Denmark16-1024x679.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"679\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Musicians recommended by the Royal Danish Embassy in Japan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In closing, we would like to introduce musicians recommended by the Royal Danish Embassy in Japan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(1) DR Big Band<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>This famous jazz orchestra was established in 1964 and has played with iconic jazz musicians including Miles Davis, Stan Getz and Joe Henderson. She has collaborated with Major Lazer, Justin Bieber and Iggy Azalea, amongst others. She is one of the most popular artists amongst adolescents in Denmark, and one of the Danish artists who have made it internationally.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lean On \u2013 by Major Lazer &amp; DJ Snake (feat.
