Min-On
has brought a number of operatic performances
to Japan, beginning with the Bayerische Staatsoper
(Bavarian State Opera of Munich) in 1974. Despite
limited popular access to opera in Japan at the time,
these performances and others in this series were
acclaimed as pioneering steps in bringing appreciation
of this classical art form to a new generation of opera
fans and enthusiasts.
Opera blends music and theater into a complex art form
featuring distinct cultural trademarks. Italian opera,
for instance, is more extravagant, showcasing singers'
power and distinctiveness, as exemplified in the
performances of the great soprano Maria Callas.
The German counterpart, on the other hand, highlights the theatrical
and the director's creativity, as seen in the works of Wieland Wagner.
Min-On has brought both these great traditions to Japan, noteworthy
examples including the Teatro alla Scala (Italy) and the Oper der
Stadt Koln (Germany). |
